China Fortune, one of Athens’ best-loved restaurants, opened for business in the mid 90’s. This poor grad student used to take his young family there for a once-a-month treat to the finest Chinese food in town. The restaurant location at that time felt something like a secret place only for those “in the know,” accessing it, as it were, via an unassuming door that led up a steep staircase to a second floor restaurant that was, it turned out, no secret at all because the restaurant was invariably packed with happy customers. Sandy Fan, the indefatigable owner/operator was always there to greet customers by name while simultaneously managing both wait and kitchen staff with aplomb. Her success in that location led her to the restaurant space that is now for lease on Stimson Avenue. With easier access, better visibility, improved parking, a bigger kitchen and much larger dining room, Sandy grew her business to include hundreds of new customers who soon became “in the know” as well. Now, after years of tireless service, Sandy has closed the restaurant but offers up this remarkable space (equipment / small wares included) to the next generation of foodie dreamers and do-ers!
