The People Business

I’ve always been in the “people business,” first as an English teacher, and then as the owner of a museum design company, helping curators to develop and implement the stories they wanted to tell. In 1982, I received my M.Ed. in Community Counseling from Ohio University and worked as a private-practice mental health therapist for many years.

In 1991, I earned my Real Estate License and quickly realized that I had found my true calling. Armed with the skills I had honed as an educator, designer, and therapist, I found immense satisfaction in ushering real estate clients through the process of buying and selling homes. The sparkle in new homeowners’ eyes is still such a rush!

My Story

I was born and raised in Williamsport, in the Northern Pennsylvania mountains that skirt the Susquehanna River Valley. Here my family of farmers and educators instilled in me the sense that a house is more than bricks and mortar – a house is a home, a haven, a nest. I carry this philosophy with me to every showing. My wish for all my clients is that they find the perfect house where they can be safe, relaxed, and really feel “at home.”

In 1969, I graduated from Susquehanna University (Selinsgrove, PA) with a BA in English Literature and minors in Theatre and Psychology. In 1970, I moved to Athens, Ohio as a young faculty wife and grad student at Ohio University. We intended to stay for only three years but fell deeply in love with the community and bought an old farm, a historic 100 house and 120 acres. We restored the house and amassed a menagerie of two cows, three goats, eight cats, two hives of bees and a beagle dog.

In 1972, my partner and I started a museum design firm to best utilize our design, writing, research, and organizational skills. Within ten years, we built a nationally respected company which is still today developing museums all around the world.

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, my daughter Ashley and I lived in several homes throughout Athens County, from the rolling hills of the Amesville area to Athens’ historic East Side neighborhood. Falling in love with and restoring beautiful houses became a hobby of mine (and an occupational hazard!)

In July 2000, I married the man of my dreams and moved into a contemporary home, perched on a ridge overlooking Athens. My husband had moved to Athens in 1967, fell in love with the town just as I did, and served as an Ohio University Administrator and Psychology Professor for over forty years. In 2008, we bought and renovated our current home, a contemporary ranch tucked into 2.5 acres of woods on the west edge of Athens. We garden and feed the birds and enjoy the serenity of our peaceful place.

Family Ties

Girl with Sold Sign My daughter Ashley is co-director of a private high school in San Francisco and loves the fast pace of city life. Nevertheless, she misses the Athens of her youth. As a young girl, thanks to the safe and insular nature of Athens, she enjoyed a bicycle-propelled freedom unheard of in urban and suburban areas. She spent her childhood building clubhouses in the woods, riding her bike along the bike path to the city pool, walking to school, and visiting her East Side friends. Having gained the perspective of the perils of urban living, she speaks of moving back to Athens once she has children of her own.

Spreading My Wings

After fifteen years as a Realtor, in the winter of 2006 I earned my Real Estate Broker’s license. In August 2006, my team of three Realtors and I “spread our wings” and founded Liz Maule Realty. We restored a historic East Side Victorian home to use as our office. We grew and prospered, and by 2011 we were eleven Realtors strong – nine women and two men – and had become one of the top three real estate offices in the local market. (Some months we were #1!) We built a reputation for professional, consumer-oriented service – “experienced, patient, and fun!”

In the fall of 2011, after much thought and discussion, Russell Chamberlain and I decided to merge our two companies under The Athens Real Estate Company name with Russell and myself as co-brokers. Together we created the largest real estate company in the area with the breadth, flexibility, and efficiency to be effective in today’s market. Together we are the premier edition – the biggest, the best, the most experienced, patient, fun, progressive, innovative, green, best-view-of-the-Hocking company there is! We now have 18 real estate agents offering services to buyers, sellers, and renters, including residential, commercial, land, auction, property management, leasing, and just good old-fashioned advice on all things real estate.

Coffee and The View

IWe are located at 540 W. Union Street in Athens, in a dramatic, “green,” contemporary building. My office, with its wall of glass, has the best view of the Hocking River Valley and the waterfalls at White’s Mill. Come on over and have a look, chat with me about real estate, and have a cup of Joe from the Catalyst Café – the coffee’s on me!
